When Chhouk, an Asian elephant calf, was found, he was alone, underweight, and had a severe foot injury. Conservationist Nick Marx of Wildlife Alliance rescued the baby elephant. With help from the Cambodian Forestry Administration, the Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, and an elephant named Lucky, Nick nursed Chhouk back to health and made him an artificial foot. One of the first animals to ever be fitted with a prosthetic, Chhouk helped pioneer the technology and, most importantly, was able to walk again!

This is an incredible true animal rescue story! I love elephants so much! Especially baby elephants! They are such pure creatures. We do not deserve them.

I love the elephant illustrations in this book. The illustrator displayed every emotion the elephants were feeling, from happy and playful to sad and pitiful. I drew elephants in my fourth book, “Backyard Jungle: The Adventures of Maddie and Albert,” so I know how hard it is to draw them.

This is such a great story that I wanted to learn more about the organization that helped Chhouk. The Wildlife Alliance saves elephants, tigers, gibbons, and other animals in Cambodia by protecting the rainforest and helping communities make a living. If you want to learn more or are interested in donating, check out their website through the link below:

It’s nice to know that so many people are dedicated to helping injured animals.

If you’re wondering how to pronounce Chhouk’s name, check out this Wildlife Alliance YouTube video I found:
