Erik always tries his best, but he just can’t understand why he’s missing homework questions at school and messing up at soccer practice. Then one day in art class everyone notices that Erik’s painted a picture of himself with green hair! It turns out he’s not just creative, he’s color blind, too.

A great way to introduce kids to the concept of color blindness. Or as it is called now Color Vision Deficiency or Color Vision Confusion. These are more correct terms because they can still see colors just not the correct ones.

I really could have used this book when I was younger because my grandpa, the fabulous John Redmond, had Color Vision Deficiency. I asked my mom about it many times growing up and again recently, but she couldn’t give me much information. He did wear a lot of orange, so we guess that was a color he could see well, which is the opposite of what Erik can see. I really don’t know why I didn’t directly ask my grandpa about it. I guess I thought it would have been rude to ask or it just didn’t seem all that important back then. Now I can never ask him.

See how the colors are all muddied. I can’t imagine not being able to see all the different shades of color in the world.

While I was getting information on this book on goodreads.com, I read someone’s review telling the story of their own experience with a friend who has CVD. I love this person’s story almost as much as Erik’s story. I hope this person doesn’t mind that I’m sharing it with you now.

While research CVD on Google, I found out more information on the EnChroma glasses. EnChroma glasses are ‘an optical assistive device for enhancement of color discrimination in persons with color blindness’. I’d seen many reaction videos on Facebook of people wearing the glasses for the first time, but I didn’t really register what was happening until I read this book and watch the following videos.
