Young Children

It seems that wherever Aria goes, someone wants to touch her hair. In the street, strangers reach for her fluffy curls; and even under the sea, in the jungle, and in space, she’s chased by a mermaid, monkeys, and poked by aliens…until, finally, Aria has had enough!

This book teaches young children the importance of asking for permission first, respecting personal boundaries, and not being afraid to say no. These are important lessons to learn when you’re young. There are some adults who don’t ask for permission before doing something. Example: the majority of people who walk up to my service dog and pet him without asking are adults.

I can understand why a child would want to touch someone’s fluffy curly hair, it looks so soft and people like to touch soft things.

When I was in elementary school, a lot of the boys had their hair gelled to make it all spiky and I wanted to touch it so bad. I imagined it would be like touching a hedgehog. I can’t remember if I ever did touch someone’s spiky hair but I’m pretty sure I did, and I just don’t remember it. Side note, I actually got the chance to touch a hedgehog quill and they’re a lot sharper than you would think.

Bottomline, control your impulses, don’t touch something just because you want to, don’t be afraid to set boundaries and don’t be afraid to say no. That last lesson is one I still need to work on.
