Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster by Debra Frasier

2nd Grade and Up

Sage has misheard and misunderstood the word miscellaneous, one of Mrs. Page’s weekly vocabulary words. Her error leads to a humbling catastrophe: a momentous tragedy, in front of the entire class. Can Sage turn her vocabulary disaster: an event bringing great misfortune, into a triumph: a true success?
Anyone who has ever been daunted: discouraged or disheartened, by a mere word in the dictionary will cheer wildly: in a manner lacking all restraint, as Sage transforms embarrassment into victory.

This is a story that every school age kid can relate to and enjoy. The illustrations are tremendously creative and cleverly includes multiple vocabulary words throughout the book’s narrative.

I read this book back in elementary school and, until recently, haven’t seen it since. The reason I couldn’t find the book is because I couldn’t remember the name of it. When the title of the book you’re trying to find is a misspelled word, it’s very difficult to find said book. I was so excited to find this book because it’s one of those books that sticks in your head and you still remember it even when you’re an adult.

Bonus Lifetime Story Moment: I’ll never forget this one time in second grade when my teacher accidently started spelling one of the spelling words during the test.

As another bonus, here’s a Frazz comic featuring a funny vocabulary word:
