The Old Man and the Penguin: A True Story of True Friendship by Julie Abery

Young Children

Told in rhyming verse, this is the true story of an oil-soaked penguin, the man who rescues him, and an unlikely friendship.

If the picture of an old man holding hands with a penguin doesn’t get your attention, nothing will.

This adorable, heartfelt tale of friendship is told in rhyme based on the true story of João and Dindim, the Magellanic penguin.

The Author’s Note gives more information about João and Dindim and the consequences of oil spills on sea animals.

Here’s a picture of the real João and Dindim.

They are so cute together! I love penguins so much! I love how they waddle around on their little legs and flap their wings like they’re trying to fly. I’m so jealous that Dindim lets João hold him and cuddle him. I want to cuddle a penguin!
