Book Title & Alexandra's Review

Fiona the Hippo by Richard Cowdrey & Saving Fiona: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Baby Hippo by Thane Maynard

Meet Fiona, an international phenomenon, beloved by everyone, and the only hippo (that I know of) who has their own Facebook page.

Fiona the Hippo is so special, she not only has one book written about her, she has TWO!

One is an illustrated children’s picture book and the other is full of facts and photographs.

In this delightful story, inspired by the real adventure of this heroic hippo, join Fiona and her lovable animal friends at the zoo as she is introduced to the world in this whimsical and inspiring tale of perseverance and friendship.

This book is well-drawn and a good introduction for younger readers to learn about Fiona.

The amazing, true story of Fiona, a baby hippo born prematurely at the Cincinnati Zoo, the team of scientists and caregivers who nursed her to health, and the vast community in Cincinnati and beyond who rallied around her.

This book goes into more facts about the birth and the raising of the young hippo and includes full color behind the scenes photographs.

I think the reason people love Fiona so much is because she was born premature and no one knew is she’d survive. Everyone loves an underdog story. And I was surprised to see a hippo being so sweet and cuddly since they are the second most dangerous African animal.

Before I wrap up this book review, I’d like to share one of my favorite Fiona pictures.

I love this picture so much. This guy is proposing to his girlfriend and Fiona comes in like “Hey, what’s going on here?” That is one photogenic hippo.
