Frankenstein Doesn’t Wear Earmuffs! by John Loren

HAPPY OCTOBER!

Let’s get this Monster Marsh October marathon started with a hilarious and clever Halloween story.

Young Children

A young boy with an overactive imagination gets ready to go trick-or-treating, but will his overly concerned parents ruin his plans for Halloween?

Finally, an imaginative Halloween story everyone can relate to.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever had to wear a jacket over your awesome costume to trick or treat. It’s so frustrating. I didn’t have to worry about this much since I live in California, and it doesn’t get that cold here. I think the trick is to find a costume that is both cool and will keep you warm in the chilly October weather. Like a full-body animal costume.

Some of the stuff the boy’s parents try to give him are pretty ridiculous. The fanny pack and the reflective underwear are a tad overkill. The point is to travel light so you can carry all your candy.

I love how the illustrations go back and forth between the boy’s monster fantasy and reality. I love stories that do that.

I’d also like to point out that Frankenstein is the name of the doctor who created him, not the name of the monster.
