Book Title & Alexandra's Review

‘If Animals Disappeared’ Series by Lily Williams

For Anyone Who Wants to Learn About Animals

Each book follows the same writing format: Introducing the animal and its history, explaining why they are essential to its ecosystem, why they are threatened, and the chain of events if that animal disappeared. All of the science and information are simplified and easy to understand.

If Sharks Disappeared

What would happen if sharks disappeared completely?

Explore how such a loss would affect animals across the whole planet in this clever book about the importance of keeping sharks and our oceans healthy.

Poor sharks get a bad rep for being blood-thirsty monsters, thanks to the movie industry. Sharks are actually tremendously important apex predators that keep the ocean food chain balanced by eating sick, slow or weak prey.

This book was helpful while researching for my newest ocean-based picture book. I’m making sure to include facts like sharks are important to the ocean’s ecosystem and that you are more likely to be hurt by a toilet than by a shark.

If Polar Bears Disappeared

What would happen if polar bears disappeared completely?

Explore what would happen if the sea ice melts, causing the extinction of polar bears, and how it would affect environments around the globe.

This is an excellent introduction to the effects of climate change in the Arctic. Basically, climate change is warming the Earth, causing the sea ice to melt. If too much sea ice melts, not only would polar bears suffer, but all the plants and animals living in the Arctic ecosystem as well.

What I liked most about this book was that it explains how the ocean absorbs the sun’s heat, which warms the water, causing more sea ice to melt. It’s a vicious cycle!

The Glossary does an excellent job explaining climate change and greenhouse gases.

If Elephants Disappeared

What would happen if forest elephants disappeared completely?

Trace the effects of such a loss on not just the elephants’ forests but the world as a whole in this beautiful book about the importance of protecting elephants.

I was surprised to learn that there are three species of elephants. Not two. They are the African savanna elephant, the Asian elephant, and the African forest elephant, which this book focuses on. We learn how important elephant poop is to the forest’s biodiversity. Elephant dung is terrific fertilizer.

It is really messed up that elephants are hunted for their ivory tusks. I much prefer the beautiful tusks to stay on the elephant.

If Bees Disappeared

What would happen if bees disappeared completely?

Explore how such a loss would affect not just the bees’ environment but the world as a whole in this poignant, beautiful book about the importance of one of the world’s smallest creatures.

For such a small creature, bees play a huge role in pollinating most of the foods we eat. Without bees to pollinate, many plants wouldn’t survive, affecting the world’s food supply and Earth’s plant life as we know it. In my opinion, their disappearance would be the worst possible thing. Mainly because I don’t want to live in a world without tasty fruit!

Information in the back of the book includes a glossary, an Author’s Note, and a list of how you can help save bees.

If Tigers Disappeared

What would happen if tigers disappeared?

Discover the important role tigers play in keeping nature in balance and the devastating reality of what our world might look like without them.

Out of all five books in this series, I wanted to get my hands on this one the most. I LOVE TIGERS! They are powerful, beautiful creatures, and I would be devastated if they were to disappear. We’ve already lost three of the original nine subspecies of tiger. The world can’t afford to lose any of the other six subspecies!

Information in the back of the book includes a glossary, an Author’s Note, and a list of how you can help save tigers. My favorite suggestion was adopting a tiger online. I want to symbolically adopt a tiger!

Well, that’s it for 2022! See you all next year!
